Do You Need a New ETIAS When You Get a New Passport

Usually, yes. If you are a United States citizen and the European Travel Information and Authorisation System is required for your trip, getting a new passport means you must obtain a new ETIAS travel authorisation. ETIAS is electronically linked to the passport used in the application and cannot be transferred to a replacement document. However, travellers may temporarily be permitted to enter without ETIAS during the system’s planned transition period and, in narrower circumstances, its grace period.

As of September 15, 2026, ETIAS is not operating and applications are not open. The European Union expects it to begin in the last quarter of 2026 but has not announced a specific launch date. Do not pay a website claiming that it can submit, reserve or preregister an official application before the system opens. For more about the position for American visitors, see Do Americans Need ETIAS for Europe in 2026.

This guidance focuses on United States citizens travelling with ordinary passport books. Rules may differ for travellers of other nationalities, people who need visas, holders of diplomatic or official passports, qualifying family members of European Union citizens and people using other travel documents.

How the transition and grace periods affect the answer

ETIAS is planned to begin with a six-month transition period. During this period, travellers who would normally need ETIAS are expected to be allowed to enter participating European countries without an authorisation if they satisfy all other entry conditions. The European Commission may extend the transition period.

A six-month grace period is planned to follow. During that period, travellers within the scope of ETIAS are generally expected to hold a valid authorisation. Border authorities may nevertheless allow a person without ETIAS to enter if it is that traveller’s first entry after the transition period and all other entry conditions are met. This is a limited exception rather than a dependable alternative to applying.

These periods matter if you replace your passport shortly before or after ETIAS launches. An authorisation linked to your old passport will not become valid for the new passport. You might still be able to travel without a replacement authorisation during the transition period, or under the limited first-entry exception during the grace period, but you should not assume that an old ETIAS covers the new document.

The safest approach is to apply using the new passport as soon as applications are available and you know ETIAS will apply to your travel date. Check the official rules again close to departure because the exact launch date, transition dates and any extensions will determine what you need.

Renew your passport before applying when possible

If you expect to replace your passport before travelling, complete the renewal or replacement first. Apply for ETIAS only after the new passport arrives. This prevents you from obtaining an authorisation that will be unusable with the passport you actually take on your trip.

An ETIAS authorisation will normally remain valid for up to three years or until the associated passport expires, whichever happens first. Applying with a passport close to expiry could therefore provide much less than three years of ETIAS validity.

Consider obtaining a new passport before applying if:

  • your passport will expire before or soon after the trip;
  • you expect to change your legal name;
  • your passport has been lost, stolen or seriously damaged;
  • you need a new passport book because you lack usable pages; or
  • a renewal or replacement application is already being processed.

The travel document used for ETIAS generally should not expire less than three months after your intended departure from the countries requiring ETIAS and should not be more than ten years old. Exceptions and destination-specific entry rules may apply. Some countries or carriers may also impose practical requirements that are stricter than the minimum, so check every destination on your itinerary.

Wait until the new passport is physically in your possession. Enter the passport number, issuing country, expiration date and name exactly as printed. Never use an estimated number or copy details from an old booking, airline account or expired passport.

What different passport changes mean for ETIAS

Renewal after ETIAS approval

If you renew after receiving ETIAS approval, the existing authorisation remains connected to the previous passport. You will need to submit another application for the new passport unless the transition or grace-period arrangements allow you to make that particular trip without an authorisation.

The standard application fee is planned to be €20. Applicants under age 18 or over age 70 are exempt, as are certain qualifying family members of European Union citizens. Official guidance does not describe a special fee waiver solely because an earlier authorisation became unusable after passport replacement. You should therefore plan for the normal application fee when applying with the new passport unless you qualify for an exemption.

Loss theft or damage

Report a lost or stolen United States passport promptly and follow the United States Department of State procedure for obtaining a replacement. A passport with significant damage, particularly damage affecting the data page or electronic chip, may cause boarding or border problems and should be replaced.

After the replacement arrives, use only its details for ETIAS. The authorisation connected to the missing or damaged passport does not transfer, even if both documents show the same name, nationality and date of birth.

A legal name change

If marriage, divorce, a court order or another legal event leads to a passport being issued in a new name, apply using the name and other details printed in that passport. Your airline reservation should also match the document you will present.

Check saved traveller information carefully. Airline and frequent-flyer profiles may retain an old surname, passport number or expiration date. Updating a booking does not update ETIAS, and updating ETIAS does not automatically change an airline record.

A passport with more pages

United States passport holders cannot add visa pages to an existing passport book. They must renew if they need more pages and may request a large book. The standard book has 26 pages, while the large-format book has 52. Because the larger book is a newly issued passport with a different number, it requires a new ETIAS application when an authorisation is required.

What to do when departure is approaching

A passport renewal close to a European trip creates two separate timing issues: receiving the new passport and obtaining ETIAS if it is required for the travel date. Do not submit an ETIAS application with your old passport if that document will no longer be valid when you travel.

As of September 15, 2026, routine United States passport processing takes four to six weeks. Expedited processing takes two to three weeks and costs an additional $60. These estimates cover processing at a passport agency or centre, not mailing. An application may take up to two weeks to arrive for processing, and delivery of the completed passport may take up to another two weeks.

Travellers with international travel within 14 calendar days may be eligible to seek an appointment at a passport agency, but appointments are limited and not guaranteed. Confirm the current procedure before relying on urgent service.

Once ETIAS begins, most applications are expected to be processed within minutes. A decision can take up to four days, however. The period may be extended by up to 14 days if additional information or documents are requested, or by up to 30 days if an interview is required. Allow time for these possibilities rather than applying immediately before departure.

After receiving a decision, check:

  1. The passport number: Compare every letter and numeral with the new passport.
  2. The name: Make sure it corresponds to the name printed in the document.
  3. The passport validity: Confirm that it meets the rules for every destination.
  4. The ETIAS dates: Check that the authorisation will be valid throughout the trip.
  5. The airline record: Replace any old passport details saved in your reservation or traveller profile.
  6. The application number: Retain the confirmation email in case you need to review the application.

Carrying both passports does not transfer ETIAS from one to the other. Although an old passport containing a valid visa may sometimes be carried with a new passport under another country’s visa rules, ETIAS works differently. The passport presented for travel must match the passport associated with the authorisation. If an approval shows the old number, a misspelled name or another important error, follow the official correction instructions or make a new application as directed.
