Samsung Gallery OneDrive Sync Stopped After September 30 2026

If Samsung Gallery no longer shows photos that used to appear from OneDrive, do not move or delete anything yet. Samsung Gallery’s direct OneDrive sync ended on September 30, 2026, so OneDrive-only photos are no longer displayed in Gallery. The files already stored in OneDrive remain there. First verify the correct Microsoft account and a few original files, then decide whether to leave the archive online, save selected items back to the phone, or transfer a larger collection. Finally, set up OneDrive Camera backup for future photos and videos.

Understand what changed on September 30, 2026

The discontinued feature was Samsung Gallery’s direct connection to Microsoft OneDrive, not OneDrive storage itself. Photos and videos previously uploaded through Gallery sync remain in OneDrive and can still be viewed in the OneDrive app or a web browser. However, items held only in OneDrive no longer appear in Samsung Gallery. Files that are still physically stored on the Galaxy phone should continue to appear in Gallery.

Do not try to relink Samsung Gallery to OneDrive as a fix. The old Gallery sync service is no longer available. Samsung confirms that files stored through the former service remain accessible in OneDrive in its Gallery and OneDrive support guidance.

Choose the result you want before making changes:

  • Keep older originals in OneDrive: Best when phone storage is limited and you only occasionally need an older photo or video.
  • Save selected files to the phone: Best when particular pictures, albums or videos must be available in Samsung Gallery and other Android apps.
  • Restore a larger library: Best only when the phone, a computer or external storage has sufficient free capacity and you want regular access to a substantial archive.

Verify the OneDrive archive before restoring anything

A photo disappearing from Samsung Gallery does not mean that it was deleted. Check the cloud copy independently before downloading files, changing account settings or clearing storage.

  1. Open the OneDrive app on the Galaxy phone.
  2. Tap the account image at the upper left and note the Microsoft account email address shown there.
  3. Open Photos and browse several dates. Then open Files and look through folders that may contain older uploads.
  4. Check examples from several periods, including older photos, recent photos from before September 30, 2026, and videos.
  5. Open several important items rather than relying only on thumbnails.
  6. If a file seems absent, sign in through a web browser with the same Microsoft account and check again.

The Microsoft account can be different from the email address used for the Samsung account. A common problem is that OneDrive is signed in to a different personal account, or to a work or school account, while the old archive is in another personal Microsoft account.

If specific files are missing from both the app and website, inspect the OneDrive Recycle Bin before assuming they are permanently gone. Do not empty the Recycle Bin while investigating. If the archive is present, you do not need the former Samsung-to-Microsoft account link to use OneDrive Camera backup.

Choose whether to leave files online or save local copies

Situation one: keep the older archive in OneDrive

This option suits a large archive and a phone with limited free space. Use OneDrive to find older content, then save an original only when you need it locally for editing, sharing through another app or viewing in Samsung Gallery.

Hypothetical example: Maya has 180 GB of family photos in OneDrive and 35 GB free on her Galaxy phone. She checks photos and videos from several years in the correct OneDrive account, leaves the archive online and enables Camera backup for new camera pictures. When she needs to edit an older portrait in Samsung Gallery, she saves only that file to her phone.

OneDrive Camera backup is a backup process, not two-way photo synchronization. After you have verified that a local item has uploaded successfully, deleting the phone copy does not delete the backed-up OneDrive copy. Still, open the cloud copy in the correct account before deleting an important local original.

Situation two: save selected photos or videos to Gallery

Use Save in OneDrive when you need an ordinary local copy. Microsoft’s current Android steps require List view for the folder contents:

  1. In OneDrive, open the folder containing the photos or videos.
  2. Switch from thumbnails to List view if necessary.
  3. Tap the three-dot More button beside one file and choose Save. To save several items, press and hold one file, select additional files, then use More and Save.
  4. Choose a destination on the device and tap Save to confirm.
  5. Open Samsung Gallery and look for the saved files, including in its Downloads album if that is where they were placed.

Keep offline is designed to make a OneDrive file or folder available without an internet connection. For a copy you specifically want Samsung Gallery and other Android apps to treat as local media, use Save and choose a normal media location such as Pictures.

If a saved image is visible in My Files but not in Gallery, check the destination folder first. Move or copy it into Internal storage > Pictures if appropriate. Also check that the folder does not contain a file named .nomedia, which tells Android media apps not to scan that folder. A large import can take time to appear; restarting the phone can prompt a fresh media scan.

Situation three: restore a larger library

Before a bulk restore, check Settings > Device care > Storage. Leave meaningful free capacity beyond the size of the photos and videos themselves for Android updates, apps and temporary files. Do not begin a 60 GB transfer simply because the phone reports 60 GB free.

Hypothetical example: Daniel has 120 GB free and wants regular access to about 40 GB of travel photos. He downloads the collection to a computer, checks that a sample of the downloaded files opens, connects the Galaxy phone by USB and copies the collection to Pictures > Travel Archive. He keeps the OneDrive originals until he has checked that the expected folders and representative files appear in Gallery.

A computer is usually easier for a large archive because it provides clearer progress information and more room to organize folders. If you restore directly on the phone, work in small batches and check each batch in Gallery before starting the next one. Avoid putting a restored archive into a device folder selected for Camera backup unless you intend OneDrive to assess that folder for upload.

Turn on OneDrive Camera backup for future photos

Camera backup is controlled in the OneDrive Android app, not in Samsung Gallery. Install or update OneDrive from Google Play, then sign in to the Microsoft account where you want future backups stored.

  1. Open OneDrive and tap the account image at the upper left.
  2. If the app shows Camera backup is off, tap Turn on. Otherwise, open Settings > Camera backup.
  3. Confirm that the displayed backup account is the intended Microsoft account.
  4. Tap Confirm or switch Camera backup on.
  5. When Android requests access, allow OneDrive access to all photos and videos so it can back up media in the background.
  6. Keep the app open initially and allow the first scan time to complete.

Camera backup can be active for only one OneDrive account at a time. If it is set to the wrong account, turn Camera backup off, select the intended account, and enable it again. Microsoft’s OneDrive Camera backup instructions for Android also explain the account, charging and folder settings.

The first backup may examine eligible media already on the device, not just photos taken after setup. Use Wi-Fi, connect the charger if you have enabled charging-only backup, and do not judge the result until OneDrive has had time to finish its initial scan.

Include videos, screenshots and other required folders

The camera folder is not necessarily the whole Galaxy library. Screenshots, edited images, downloaded media and pictures from messaging or social apps may be stored in separate folders.

In OneDrive, open account image > Settings > Camera backup and review the available controls:

  • Camera backup account: Confirm the exact Microsoft account before any large upload begins.
  • Include videos: Turn this on if videos are part of the backup plan. Videos can consume considerably more time, data and cloud storage.
  • Back up device folders: Choose required folders such as Screenshots and supported folders created by messaging, social-media or editing apps.
  • Categorize: Turn it on to retain the original device-folder grouping for selected uploads. Turn it off if you want those images collected in OneDrive Camera Roll instead.
  • Data usage: Choose Wi-Fi only to avoid mobile-data use, or permit Wi-Fi and mobile network when continuous backup away from Wi-Fi matters more.
  • Backup only when charging: Enable it to reduce battery use, but remember that uploads may wait until the phone is charging.

Folder names vary by installed app and Android version, so select the folder based on the pictures shown in it rather than relying on a generic name. Also check available OneDrive storage from the account area. A full or over-quota account cannot accept new uploads; free space or increase the storage allowance before retesting.

Test the new backup before relying on it

Take one unimportant test photo after Camera backup is enabled. Keep OneDrive open at first, use the network allowed by your data-usage setting, and wait for the upload to finish. Find the test image in OneDrive, open it and confirm that it is in the intended account. Recording the test time makes it easier to identify among older photos.

Do not expect later Gallery edits, album changes or deletions to be mirrored automatically in OneDrive. Likewise, moving files or reorganizing folders in OneDrive does not recreate matching albums in Samsung Gallery.

Fix stalled uploads and prevent avoidable duplicates

  • Older photos disappeared from Gallery but are in OneDrive: This is the expected result of the service ending. Leave them online or save local copies to a media folder.
  • Nothing new uploads: Open OneDrive, confirm Camera backup is on, verify the backup account, check OneDrive storage and review the data-usage and charging-only settings.
  • Permissions are limited: Open the phone’s app permissions for OneDrive and allow access to all photos and videos. The exact Android menu wording varies by software version.
  • Backup stops after you close the app: Do not swipe OneDrive away from the recent-apps screen. Microsoft says Camera backup requires the app to be running. If the issue continues, check the Galaxy battery settings for restrictions on OneDrive’s background activity.
  • Screenshots or messaging images are missing: Return to Back up device folders and select the specific folders. Camera backup does not automatically include every app folder.
  • Uploads appear duplicated: Compare filenames, dates, file sizes and folders before deleting either copy. Test the new setup with one newly taken photo before adding restored archives to any backed-up folder.
  • Google Photos is also active: Google Photos and OneDrive can each upload the same local image to separate cloud libraries. Review each service’s deletion behavior before cleaning up; see how to delete Google Photos copies without deleting phone photos.

Do not use deletion as a test. Keep an important photo on the phone until you have opened its OneDrive copy, confirmed the correct account and verified that a second newly taken test photo uploads under the settings you intend to keep.
