If your iPhone shows iOS 26.7 instead of iOS 27, it will usually be because Apple is offering two separate update paths. Both iOS 26.7 and iOS 27 were released on September 14, 2026. iOS 26.7 is an update for people who want to remain on the iOS 26 branch, while iOS 27 is the newer major operating-system version. On the Software Update screen, iOS 26.7 may appear first and an option to Upgrade to iOS 27 may be listed at the end of the screen under Also Available.
That layout is normal and does not mean that iOS 27 is unavailable. A separate issue has also been reported by some users: after selecting the iOS 27 option, a later screen may still display iOS 26.7. Apple has not published support guidance specifically confirming this label discrepancy. Do not use the download size to decide which update you are receiving. Check the version information where possible, and confirm the installed version after the iPhone restarts.
Identify the update option on your screen
Open Settings > General > Software Update. The screen normally shows your installed iOS version and any compatible updates. Match what you see to the situations below before installing anything.
| What you see | What it means | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| iOS 26.7 appears first, with iOS 27 under Also Available | Apple is offering both the iOS 26 update and the major iOS 27 upgrade. | Tap Upgrade to iOS 27 if you want the new major version. |
| Only iOS 26.7 appears | Your iPhone may not support iOS 27, may need an earlier available update, or may be having trouble checking for updates. | Check your model, installed version and internet connection. |
| You choose iOS 27, but another screen says iOS 26.7 | This may be a temporary display inconsistency. | Review the available details, then wait and check again or update with a computer if the information remains unclear. |
iOS 26.7 is not an alternative name for iOS 27. Apple lists them as separate releases. iOS 26.7 includes iOS 26 features, bug fixes and security updates, while iOS 27 is the current major release.
How to choose iOS 27
If iOS 27 appears under Also Available, you can select it directly from the iPhone. Back up first, especially if this is your first major iOS upgrade since iOS 26.
- Open Settings.
- Tap General, then Software Update.
- Scroll to the end of the screen below the iOS 26.7 update.
- Tap Upgrade to iOS 27.
- Review More Details, if shown, then tap Download and Install and follow the onscreen instructions.
Apple says that the More Details area displays the version number and information about the update. Check it before proceeding. An iPhone cannot ordinarily be downgraded to an earlier iOS version after an update has been installed.
To make an iCloud backup, go to Settings > [your name] > iCloud > iCloud Backup and tap Back Up Now. You can also create a backup on a Mac with Finder, or on a Windows computer with Apple Devices or iTunes, depending on your setup.
If you do not want an update to install while you are deciding, go to Settings > General > Software Update > Automatic Updates. Turn off Automatically Install temporarily, then install your chosen update manually. Automatic installation normally happens overnight while the iPhone is charging and connected to Wi-Fi.
What to do when iOS 27 is missing
First, check whether your iPhone supports iOS 27. Apple lists the iPhone 11 range and later models, plus iPhone SE models from the second generation onward, among the compatible devices. To identify your iPhone, open Settings > General > About and look for Model Name.
If your iPhone is not compatible, it will not offer iOS 27. It may still receive an update for the older supported software branch, such as iOS 26.7. Installing the latest compatible version is still important for security and reliability.
If your model supports iOS 27, check the installed version in Settings > General > About. Apple notes that an iPhone running an earlier version may need to install the current available update before the latest major upgrade is offered. Install only an update that is clearly identified, then return to Software Update.
Also make sure the iPhone has power, sufficient free storage and a reliable internet connection. Apple identifies lack of storage, slow downloads, inability to reach the update server and incomplete installations as common reasons an over-the-air update may fail.
If you see an alert such as Unable to Check for Update, Unable to Download or an error that says the update cannot be verified, try again on a reliable Wi-Fi network. Disconnecting a virtual private network or proxy may also help if it prevents contact with Apple’s update servers. If the problem continues on more than one network, update using a computer instead.
When the iOS 27 selection changes to iOS 26.7
Some people have reported that they tapped Upgrade to iOS 27 but then saw iOS 26.7 on a subsequent update card, download label or installation screen. Because Apple has not published a specific explanation for this behaviour, treat inconsistent labels cautiously.
- Return to the Software Update screen and select the iOS 27 option again if it is still listed.
- Use More Details to check the stated version and update information.
- Do not assume that a larger download is iOS 27; file size is not a reliable identifier.
- If the screen remains inconsistent, close Settings, restart the iPhone and check again later.
- If you prefer not to wait, connect the iPhone to a Mac or Windows computer and use Finder, Apple Devices or iTunes to check for an update.
A computer update is useful when the Software Update screen is unreliable or an over-the-air download repeatedly fails. Connect the iPhone with a cable, select it in Finder on a Mac or in Apple Devices or iTunes on Windows, then choose Check for Update and follow the prompts.
Confirm which version was installed
After the iPhone restarts, verify the result in Settings rather than relying on a previous update label:
- Open Settings.
- Tap General.
- Tap About.
- Check the entry beside iOS Version.
If it says iOS 27, the major upgrade installed successfully. If it says iOS 26.7, the iPhone installed the iOS 26 update instead; return to Settings > General > Software Update and look for the separate iOS 27 upgrade option. Once About confirms iOS 27, you can safely follow feature-specific instructions such as how to use Call Context on iPhone with iOS 27.
Keep a possible label inconsistency separate from an ordinary update error. For storage warnings, open Settings > General > iPhone Storage and remove content or use Apple’s option to offload unused apps. For connection, verification or server errors, retry on Wi-Fi or use a computer. For an unsupported iPhone, install the latest version that Apple offers for that model.
