If Windows 11 version 26H2 is not showing up, check your installed Windows version first. Microsoft is initially offering the update to eligible PCs running Windows 11 versions 24H2 or 25H2 when the user has enabled early access to available updates. Even then, the offer may be delayed by the phased rollout, a compatibility safeguard hold, missing prerequisite updates or a Windows Update problem. PCs that came with Windows 11 version 26H1 do not have a direct upgrade path to 26H2.
Check your installed Windows version first
Windows 11 version 26H2 became available on September 29, 2026. Microsoft is releasing it in phases and says availability will expand over the following months, so a compatible PC may not receive the offer immediately.
To find the installed version, use either method:
- Open Settings, select System, then select About. Under Windows specifications, check the edition, version and operating system build.
- Alternatively, press Windows key + R, type winver, then select OK.
Use the result to choose the appropriate next step:
| Installed version | What it means | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| 24H2 or 25H2 | The PC can be eligible for the 26H2 enablement package. | Install current updates, turn on early update access if wanted, then check Windows Update again. |
| 26H1 | This release uses a different Windows core and cannot update directly to 26H2. | Continue installing its monthly updates and wait for Microsoft’s future supported upgrade path. |
| 23H2 or older | The 26H2 enablement package does not apply directly. | Use Windows Update to install a supported feature update offered for the device before looking for 26H2. |
| Unknown | Eligibility cannot be established yet. | Check Settings or run winver before trying other fixes. |
Edition also affects the support deadline. Windows 11 version 24H2 Home, Pro, Pro Education and Pro for Workstations reach end of updates on October 13, 2026. Version 24H2 Enterprise and Education editions remain supported until October 12, 2027. Home and Pro users should install a newer supported version when it is offered, but should not try to override a compatibility hold. See our guide to the Windows 11 24H2 support end date and safe update steps for more detail.
Which PCs can receive Windows 11 26H2
Windows 11 versions 24H2, 25H2 and 26H2 share the same core operating system and servicing branch. Many 26H2 features are therefore included in regular quality updates for 24H2 and 25H2 but remain inactive until a small enablement package turns them on. For eligible devices, installation normally requires one restart.
To install the 26H2 enablement package, a PC must run Windows 11 version 24H2 or 25H2 and have the September 22, 2026 preview update, KB5124010, or a later cumulative update. Rather than downloading individual update files from unofficial sites, open Settings > Windows Update, install all available updates, restart the PC and check again.
The required version and updates do not guarantee an immediate offer. Microsoft uses a controlled feature rollout and may apply a safeguard hold when it identifies a known issue involving a driver, application, peripheral or hardware configuration. A hold is intended to prevent a potentially disruptive installation rather than indicate that the PC is permanently ineligible.
Work and school PCs can also be governed by organisational update policies. If Windows Update says that settings are managed by your organisation, or the computer is managed by an employer or school, contact the information technology administrator before changing update policies or registry settings.
Why the 26H2 update may be missing
The rollout has not reached the PC
Microsoft is not offering 26H2 to every eligible device at once. It expands availability based on reliability data, so waiting is often the appropriate response when monthly updates install normally and Windows Update shows no error or compatibility message.
Early update access is turned off
Open Settings > Windows Update and turn on Get the latest updates as soon as they’re available. Microsoft says version 26H2 is initially available to eligible 24H2 and 25H2 devices whose users have enabled this setting.
This setting prioritises the device for eligible non-security updates, feature updates and improvements. It does not bypass compatibility checks, remove management policies or guarantee an immediate 26H2 offer. Regular security updates continue whether the setting is on or off.
A safeguard hold applies
A safeguard hold differs from an ordinary rollout delay. Microsoft uses one when a known compatibility issue could cause installation failures, crashes, lost functionality or other problems. Review Microsoft’s Windows 11 version 26H2 release-health page for current known issues and safeguards.
If an issue matches the PC’s hardware, driver or installed software, wait for Microsoft, the PC manufacturer or the software provider to issue a fix. Do not use unofficial installers, registry changes, unsupported scripts or third-party enablement packages to bypass a block.
Windows Update is not working correctly
Treat the problem as a Windows Update issue if ordinary cumulative updates also fail, an error code appears, or checking for updates never completes. Troubleshoot that underlying problem before expecting a feature update to appear.
Safe steps to prepare and retry the update
- Back up important files. Copy irreplaceable documents and photos to cloud storage, an external drive or another computer. If you need to consider recovery choices, see Choosing Between Windows 11 Restore Options.
- Restart the PC. This completes pending updates and can clear temporary update processes.
- Install available updates. Go to Settings > Windows Update, select Check for updates, install offered updates and restart when prompted.
- Turn on early update access. Enable Get the latest updates as soon as they’re available, then select Check for updates again.
- Check whether updates are paused. Resume them if necessary. Use a reliable internet connection, connect a laptop to power and make sure the system drive has sufficient free space.
- Run the Windows Update troubleshooter if other updates fail. Open the Get Help app, search for “Windows Update troubleshooter” and follow the prompts. You can also go to Settings > System > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters, then select Run beside Windows Update.
- Check the PC maker’s support site. Install relevant firmware and driver updates supplied for the exact computer model, particularly when Windows Update identifies a compatibility issue. Avoid generic driver-download sites.
- Wait when Windows Update is otherwise healthy. If there is no error and no action is recommended for the device, check again after the next monthly update rather than forcing version 26H2.
Do not reset or reinstall Windows merely because 26H2 is absent during the early rollout. Those measures are disproportionate unless Windows Update is broadly failing and standard troubleshooting has not resolved the problem.
If the computer shipped with Windows 11 version 26H1, these steps will not create eligibility for 26H2. Version 26H1 is a specialised release for select new hardware and is not intended as a feature update for existing Windows 11 PCs. Microsoft states that 26H1 devices cannot update to the next annual feature update in the second half of 2026 and will receive a supported path in a future Windows release. Keep installing normal 26H1 security and quality updates in the meantime.
For an eligible 24H2 or 25H2 PC, keep monthly updates current, enable early access if you want the update sooner and let Windows Update respect Microsoft’s rollout and compatibility checks. If a safeguard hold applies, wait for its documented resolution instead of installing around it.
